how do your icicles grow;
with drops from above,
or flow below?
Water expands as it freezes. (Ice is less dense than liquid water). One can imagine (??) the first bit of ice forming on the surface of the puddle and expanding in all directions including the path of least resistance which is upward, lifting the thin skim of ice above the water. ?? Upwelling of water from within the ground could also be part of the process of providing liquid water to the base of those stalactite-like shafts. We often see these as wet-ground freezes at the start of winter.
